Roofing

There are several advantages to repairing a roof. Aside from the fact that it makes your roof much safer and improves the home's appearance, there are many advantages of choosing to repair the roof rather than completely replace it. Although in some cases it may be better to replace the entire roof – especially if the damage is extensive – it's also sometimes better to simply repair the damage.

Instead of tearing down the whole roof to replace it, roof repair involves working on a small, isolated portion of your roof. Depending on the type of damage you're facing, the repair process may include patching up holes and small gaps or replacing damaged or missing slates/tiles and other materials.

Slating

Having a slate roof is a great choice. Slate roofs offer reliable protection against water, mould and fungus since slate is impervious to water. Additionally, slate is fireproof, which is an added safety feature. Moreover, slate roofs are an eco-friendly option since they can be recycled. Therefore, choosing a slate roof can be a good investment, offering durability, safety and environmental sustainability.

The durability of a slate roof is based on the type of slate utilised. Hard slate can endure from 75 to 200 years, whereas soft slate has a lifespan of approximately 50 to 125 years. Therefore, it is essential to determine the type of slate installed on the roof before deciding whether to repair, restore or replace it. With adequate maintenance, a slate roof can provide reliable protection and an appealing look for over a hundred years.

Tiling

Clay roof tiles are extremely popular and have been used for thousands of years. They are commonly used because they look good and provide strong protection from the elements. Having an absorption rate of only 6% means they take in less water than their concrete counterparts and can remain lightweight. While many manufacturers offer a 30-year guarantee on clay tiles, typically you can expect to get around 50-60 years of wear before you’ll need to consider changing clay tiles.

Concrete roof tiles are vastly popular in the UK market, having seen a surge in their use over the past 50 years. They adapt well and their lower price point makes them attractive, especially to developers. You can expect the lifespan of a concrete tile to be anywhere in the region of 50-60 years, however, they are much heavier than clay tiles. Using concrete tiles will give you a low-maintenance finish. These tiles are fire resistant too which will reduce the damage a fire could do to your property.

Leadwork

Lead sheet is one of the oldest building materials in the roofing industry and has been known to last for over 200 years. In addition, as lead is soft and malleable, it is an excellent material choice to work with and it also comes with some major benefits. When it comes to choosing roof construction materials lead sheet is, therefore, considered to be a superior choice over conventional tin or zinc.

With this in mind, we advise and highly recommend that lead is used wherever possible for the formation of valleys, parapets, box gutters, junctions, side slips, watergates, flashings and ridgeline flashings, and, where applicable, flat roof coverings.

While it’s natural to want a roofing material that complements the aesthetic of the home, the choice is about so much more. The material selected determines how your home stands against the elements, the longevity of your roof, its energy efficiency, and the kind of maintenance it will require over the years.
